In The Spotlight: Denyse Julien

Ken

Denyse started representing Canada at 21 years old when she was selected to represent Canada at the Uber Cup final in Japan in 1981.   From this point on, she has gone on to make her mark in Canadian Badminton history.

  • Only Canadian badminton player to participate in three Olympic games: Barcelona 92, Atlanta 96 and Sydney 2004.
  • Only Canadian athlete to participate in six Commonwealth Games with a total of 7 medals: 5 silver-2 bronze
  • She has a RECORD Canadian Titles - Only badminton player to win 31 National titles in the open category
  • Only Canadian badminton player to participate in three Pan-American Games with 8 medals: 5 gold,2 silver, 1 bronze
  • Denyse was 1 of only 2 Canadian players ever invited by the IBF at the World Cup final. The other player was Wendy Carter.
  • When Denyse participated in her last Olympic games in 2004 at 44 years old she was the eldest of the field by 13 years and she will  most likely hold the record of the oldest ever badminton player in  badminton at the Olympic Games.
  • Denyse was the only Canadian player to make the cover of the international magazine "World Badminton".

In all her accomplishments, being a member of the very first Canadian Olympic games team in Barcelona in 1992 is one of her biggest thrills.    A highlight in Denyse’s career was when she made the quarter-final in doubles with partner Johanne Falardeau at the prestigious All England in 1984 and the quarter- final at the Japan Open in 1986 again with partner Johanne Falardeau.

A credit to our sport, Denyse has been recognized in her home town Rouyn-Noranda where they named the gymnasium where Denyse started her career: "Le gymnase Denyse Julien" after her second participation in the Olympic Games in Atlanta.
