This course is based on the CYA Learn to Race curriculum, and is taught by CYA certified race coaches with specific experience in Opti racing. The curriculum emphasizes boat handling skills, as well as sailing skills specific to racing such as mark rounding and starting lines. Racing rules and tactics are also covered. Sailors will be provided with an ISAF Racing Rulebook.

Achievement of CYA Learn to Sail levels (White, Bronze and Silver) are not mandatory to register for this course, however sailors must be self motivated and demonstrate a reasonable aptitude for the sport. Sailors are strongly encouraged to bring their own Optimist sailboat, however, a limited number of club boats are available for use. Sailors will be encouraged to compete in local regattas.
